The big bear, estimated at 830-pounds and 12 years old, was hit by pickup near Lincoln, Montana.
According to the Blackfoot Valley Dispatch, the bear was originally captured in 1996 along the Rocky Mountain Front as part of a research study and radio-collared until 1998.
Bear specialist Jamie Jonkel was quoted as saying that the bear had become habituated to human activity and that it was likely that he would have had to be put down at some point anyway.
The specialist urged area residents to refrain from supplying unnatural food sources for area wildlife.
